how do i clean off the gooey buildup on my stove burner guards?

after 9 years, i have this awful hard and gooey blackish brownish tar like stuff covering the removable guards that sit on top of the gas burners on my stove. how can i clean this off easily? scraping is taking too long, it’s disgusting!

try using stainless steel pads that have suds in them; brillo pads I think they are called; then once cleaned, simply wrap tin foil around them; when they are dirty, toss & put new on! since it is 9 years old I think I would soak overnight in a mixture of baking soda & vinegar (which will cause a volcano effect) so be sure it is done in the sink with a dab of dishwashing soap. That should loosen it all up & if you still have problems try the brillo pads.
