Taking care of a lighter for camping?

I got a lighter to take on a camping trip next week. Is there anything I need to be careful about like while it is in my backpack? Also there is a switch on it with a plus side and a minus side, what is it for?

Important stuff:
Basic lighters are useless in cold weather…don’t remember the temp but the gas evaporates or something happens. So know where you’re going.

Also, figure out something to wedge the thing you push down with your thumb. Otherwise something in your gear will inevitably push it down and then you’ll go to be Mr. Coolfireguy and your lighter will be dead.

Thirdly, no clue how old you are but get/have your parents get you some waterproof matches from walmart/target and one of those Magnesium Blocks (if you’ve proven yourself safe with a knife).

You want as many ways as you can to start a fire and you want to practice with them. Personally, I find matches to be easiest, MagBlock to be most fun. Lighters…meh…hard to aim the flame.
