LED street light power?
what will be the power consumption of LED street light equivalent to 150Watt HPSV street light. (lumen output should be same as 150W HPSV around 14000 lumens per fixture)
I had some conflicting answers on the NET. some say it is 106 Watt others say its 30W.
Please provide some concrete proof. If someone has used such lights then great. Your help is highly appreciated.
The ballast for a 150 W HPS consumes an additional 39 watts for a total fixture wattage of 189 watts. (http://www.elights.com/philmedbashp.html)
The following data sheet (http://www.sunrainvision.com/admin/upimg/200891573544.pdf) lists the highest powered LED streetlight I’ve seen, 15,000 initial lumens, 14,000 mean – so equivalent to the 150 W HPS. However, it lists the lamp assembly as 168 watts and ballast watts as 30, so the total fixture consumption is 198 watts, higher than the HPS.
This one (http://www.relume.com/docs/pdf/rt_datasheet_street_20090216.pdf) is more typical of the LED streetlights. It doesn’t list the HPS equivalence, but the bottom fixture consumes 160 watts to provide 6,719 lumens.
It’s pretty obvious on a lumen to lumen basis, LED’s are not the energy saving panacea many seem to think they are. The argument I’ve heard is that LED’s produce a whiter light which appears brighter to the eye, so the lumens can be reduced but still provide more ‘perceived’ light.
May be, but security lighting and many other codes and requirements specify a lumen value, so absent a change in codes or a definitive study allowing an adjustment based on color temperature perception, using LED’s would actual increase energy consumption.
However, the life of LED’s is quite a bit longer, so there could be maintenance savings, just not energy savings.
