What exactly is a Marine compass?

Okay guys so I have an enduring Influences project on Ancient China to Modern America. In Ancient China marines used compasses and i read on a website that the military like the Marines use compasses, but the problem is that all I can find about military compasses is that the military lensatic compass is a standard navigational device for overland travel by members of the military when operating on land, which is great except the land part, which means it’s obviously not used by marines. But I know for sure marines use compasses I just don’t know any information about them.. so can anyone help? Basically I want a statement like that one where I know the name and like just some basic information on what they use it for. All i need is like a sentence or two and I promise to change it into my own words, I just need some help on this guys! So please if anyone has any information then that would be great! Thanks!

“Marine” in this context does not mean “marines” as in modern marine forces. The ancient Chinese used magnetized needles floating on a piece of cork in a bowl of light oil to point to magnetic North. It was used in marine (waterway and ocean) applications.
