How can the deceleration distance upon landing be maximized?

There are many well-documented cases of people falling from tremendous heights without parachutes and surviving. The record is held by a Russian who fell from an astounding 7500m. The chances of survival depend on the “deceleration distance” at the time of landing. Why is a fall from a height of 7500m no more dangerous than one from half that height? How can the deceleration distance upon landing be maximized?

It isn’t just the deceleration distance but the initial speed from which the person must be decelerated. Air resistance will limit the speed at which a person falls. This limit can be reduced by increasing the air resistance, which is one reason skydivers spreadeagle and face downward when falling. This also makes the dive last longer and makes it more fun.

A lot also depends on how the person lands, with the legs absorbing most of the impact. People have been known to survive even normally fatal falls if they break their bones in all the right places.

Sometimes, trees or other 3-D objects brake the fall before the person hits the ground, or a particularly soft landing surface such as a bog cushions the impact.
