Need help re: how to drop centerboard out of a 1985 C & C Mark III in order to reattach disconnected cable.?
1) With boat on marine railroad cradle, have taken out pivot pin which has a welded plate on one side and a nut and 3 washers on the other. I assumed that when I relaunched the boat the centerboard would drop out for recovery by a diver. But the board swings smoothly as if all the removed hardware was still in place. Any ideas as to why?
2) To reconnect the centerboard with new cable my plan is to first try using two divers and a fish to push new cable from the bottom up and hoist centerboard into place with boat in water. Failing that, I would go to the (expensive) option of renting a local travel lift and completing the reinstall on the hard. Any ideas about the best way to reinstall?
Just a guess but , there might be a sleeve or bushing the pivot pin/bolt passes through.
The CB would pivot on that even w/ pin out.
Would replace the pin & hardware if you have’nt done so already before attempting cable replacement.
Centerboard /swing keel cables usually have a fitting like a turnbuckle clevis on the end to attach to centerboard.
Would check to see if the replacement cable has the proper fitting.
Other than that, the idea of fishing the new cable should work fine as long as you can avoid kinks when taking up slack on the winch.
My boat…would try to spool the cable onto the winch drum & fish the cable end from above in or out of water.
