How does keeping a knife sharpened make it a safer tool?
1) Sharp knife requires less effort to make a cut, thus you have more control and less chance of slippage, poking yourself or someone else, etc.
2) Cuts themselves are less severe. This doesn’t really sound very logical, but in most of the cases cuts inflicted by dull knives are far worse, because a) they tend to tear the tissue instead of cutting, b) dull knives mean more force see #1, and c) torn flesh heals much slower than the scalpel type incisions made by really sharp knives.
I’ve cut myself quite a few times with very sharp knives and most of that heals practically overnight, wounds close very quickly with pressure because the edges are so smooth.
And as an added bonus sharp knives do last longer because you don’t have to lean on them as hard as on the dull ones.
