there is an exhaust port at the rear of an airplane’s tail…where does that come from?
the exhaust from the engines is released through the engines. so where is the exhaust that comes out of the rear of the tail created?
Everybody that has answered has gotten things right!
The APU (Auxilliary Power Unit) is a small turbine (jet) engine that is included on most larger aircraft/airliners.
Most APU’s are used primarily on the ground when the engines are shut down. During this phase, they can provide electrical power and air conditioning (heating/cooling) while the engines are shut down. Most airliner APUs are capable of running the entire electrical system on their own (including non-essential stuff like coffee pots and entertainment).
In addition, the APU may be used to start the engines. In larger aircraft, engines are started using “bleed air” from the APU. This bleed air is air that is taken from the APU and routed through the engines to start engine rotation before ignition actually occurs. (Think of the bleed air as being what starts the whole process and turns the engine over).
In addition to on the ground, some (but not all) APU’s can be used in flight. These APUs have special shielding that protects aircraft controls should something bad happen to the APU (IE if the APU malfunctions and throws parts, they won’t hit control lines or other critical systems).
APUs that can be used in flight serve as “backup” systems for safety. While it’s not normal for an APU to be used in flight, they can be started if the aircraft loses on of it’s primary electrical systems.
Overall and APU is designed for three things… the first is convenience. Without an APU, an airliner requires external support (air conditioning and electricity) while on the ground to run systems. Having an APU allows the same airplane to fly anywhere and not need any mechanical support.
The second is economy. APUs are cheaper to operate than engine driven systems. By being able to shut down engines on the ground, it’s cheaper. (APUs often burn two-three hundred pounds of fuel an hour vs thousands of pounds per hour for an engine).
The last is safety. The APU may provide a backup power source if one of the main (engine driven) systems fails.
