Why does my top floor hot water radiator only heat the first bar?
Radiator is on top floor and is double the height of all other top floor radiators (which all work properly). I have attempted to bleed it numerous times and get air every time but never water no matter how long I wait. Adding to my confusion is that the radiator works properly (i.e. all bars heat) if the central heating is cranking. Why? How do I fix it?
You need to raise your system pressure by adding more water. Pressure equals height in a heating system. You add water, the pressure raises, and you bleed the air vent until you get water. The reason it works when the system is cranking is the higher the water temperature , the more the water expandsand this equals higher pressure.
