What are the effects of ultra violet radiations on vegetation of an area?
U.V light is considered as hazzardous to human health.It means that they can effect the plants.If any one can help?
Ultraviolet light (radiation) is a powerful mutagen. It causes two adjacent base pairs in DNA to stick together, forming a thymine dimer that interferes with DNA replication. In animals, this can cause cancer and other cell-cycle dysfunction. In plants, it’s just as mutagenic and, in high doses, quite lethal.
As gardengallivant said, plants use various pigments to block out UV radiation. Anthocyanins, xanthophylls, and various flavonoids all do for plants what melanin (the stuff your skin produces when you get a tan) does for humans — physically blocks UV light from damaging the DNA. (Can’t hurt it if you can’t get to it.)
These mechanisms, plus enzymes that repair the damage from the little UV that gets through, protect plants from the worst of it and let them tolerate the maximum UV levels found in their native habitats. More UV than they’re normally exposed to during high summer, however, gives them nasty sunburn. They become stunted and eventually die as their exposure keeps going up.
